Boeing KC-46A Tanker Electromagnetic Tests Complete

Boeing KC-46A tanker tests under way at Naval Air Station Patuxent River on the base’s electromagnetic pulse pad. US Naval Air Systems Command via Boeing

The Boeing KC-46A tanker has completed electromagnetic tests, Boeing has announced.

The tests involved a Boeing-led team including US Air Force and US Naval Air Systems Command representatives evaluating the aircraft’s ability to safely operate through electromagnetic fields produced by radars, radio towers and other systems under mission conditions.

The Boeing KC-46 tanker electromagnetic tests were conducted on the electromagnetic pulse (EMP) and Naval Electromagnetic Radiation Facility pads at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland and in the Benefield Anechoic Facility at Edwards Air Force Base, California.

During tests on the EMP pad at Pax River, the second low-rate initial production KC-46 received pulses from a large coil/transformer situated above the aircraft.
