RAF’s last F3s bolt-hole to Lossiemouth

A 111 Squadron Tornado F3 arrives at RAF Lossiemouth. Key - Gary Parsons
11 March 2010
Tornado F3s from the RAF's 111 Squadron are temporarily moving north.
March 11: The Royal Air Force’s last Tornado F3 fighter unit, No.111(F) Squadron based at RAF Leuchars in Fife, is to relocate temporarily to RAF Lossiemouth in Moray while runway repairs are carried out over the next six weeks.
Tornado F3s have been arriving at Lossiemouth during the week and the squadron is expected to be fully relocated by the end of this week, flying normal training sorties from next week. As the squadron is responsible for the UK’s Northern Quick Reaction Alert (QRA), two F3s will be on permanent alert status ready to launch at a moment’s notice.
The Tornado F3 is expected to be retired in March 2011 when Typhoons from 6 Squadron will take over QRA duties at Leuchars. No.6 Squadron is hoping to arrive in style at Leuchars during its annual airshow, held this year on September 11.
