ANSPs need KPIs

Moving on to the third of a series considering the topic of climate change from different viewpoints within the EU aviation community, Air Traffic Management had the opportunity to speak with Saulius Batavicus, who is CEO for the Lithuanian ANSP – Oro Navigacija.

Beginning with the topic of green flying, we discussed the need for all individuals and businesses to think about how they can make decisions in their daily life to help with this topic. More specifically for ANSPs, the focus was on KPIs. What would be the most impactful ways to measure these goals and how to change ways of acting if they aren’t being met?

In considering the types of KPIs that could be measured, we discussed horizontal flight efficiency, vertical efficiency and the opportunity for reduction of times in holding zones. Having consistent KPIs across ANSPs would provide an industry standard to move in the right direction. Additionally, there could be the opportunity to monetise KPIs in order to always consider the economics of different flight planning scenarios.

Unfortunately, things don’t always go to plan, and Oro Navigacija knows this firsthand as their airspace and flight path decisions have also taken on a political component in addition to ensuring safety and the right climate change priorities. The Belarus conflict has had an impact on the ability of the ANSP to route flights as they might under normal flying conditions.
