Sustainable aviation fuel may be the headline-grabber, but there are plenty of less dramatic sustainable initiatives underway in airports today – not least the perennial problem of how to deal with food waste.

US airports are placing increasing emphasis on their waste stream reduction programmes, in particular when it comes to reducing the amount of food waste that goes to landfills. This has led them to forge partnerships with their concessionaires, with companies specialising in processing organic materials, and with organisations who distribute food to the hungry. And it’s all paying off, not only for the environment but for programme participants too.
