Pentagon helps validate Taiwan’s F-16Vs

United States Air Force test pilots are in Taiwan to assist in ground testing of Republic of China Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons upgraded by Aerospace Industrial Development Corp to the new F-16V standard. Taiwan has so four modernised four legacy F-16A and F-16B fighters to F-16V standard. As well as the APG-83 Scalable Agile Beam Radar, the upgrade includes, new mission computers, navigation equipment, large colour multifunction displays, advanced identification friend or foe transponders, an updated electronic warfare suite, and a Link 16 tactical data link.

Flight testing is scheduled for later this year, when the first batch of AIM-9X Sidewinder air-to-air missiles is delivered to Taiwan. The new version of the Sidewinder missile, with its improved seeker head capable of high off-boresight cueing via a helmet-mounted display, is more manoeuvrable and has a longer range than Taiwan’s existing air-to-air missiles.
