Two major GSE players tell Emma Kelly how they are making ground power cleaner and greener

The lack of moving parts on ITW GSE’s eGPU means maintenance costs are almost nil, according to the company

Manufacturers of airport ground power units (GPU) are getting smarter and greener in their product development. Smart, integrated and environmentally friendly battery-powered solutions are the order of the day for GPU suppliers, as they strive to meet airport operators’ and ground handling companies’ environmental, operational, efficiency and financial requirements.

Operators are increasingly looking for environmentally friendly power solutions that are also easy to use and maintain, and have an extended product life, according to ITW GSE. “One of the major drivers in Europe and the United States is to support aviation growth sustainably, with a greater focus on carbon emissions,” said Poul Elvstrøm, vice president global sales and marketing. “Airports are looking at more intelligent systems that can help them with electrification of their total ramp operation. A holistic view of the complete ground support equipment and product life is essential. It makes sense to focus on the total cost of ownership of operating a gate, including ground support equipment, rather than at each product individually,” he said.
