Ecuador’s Quito Airport has inaugurated redesigned public areas in the departure and arrival halls of its passenger terminal.
The project initiated by Corporation Quiport – which cost $2.18m (£1.5m) – had over 90 contractors working on it.
Using an array of materials, textures and designs, the facility hopes the new space will provide a better experience for passengers. Quiport partnered with experts within the design, decoration and construction fields to produce the new area.
These companies included architectural firm Stantec, Adrian Hoyos Design Studio, Octofast and Instudio.
Initially beginning in December 2019, the works had to be put on hold in March of last year due to the outbreak of coronavirus. Construction restarted soon after they were authorised to do so.
“We had the privilege of executing the remodelling work,” said Claudia Guerro, InStudio manager. “A difference with working on other types of projects is that the airport is a living space, full of movement at all times, in addition, complying with Quiport’s strict safety standards, which are the highest in the city.”
Around 56,000sq ft of ceramic flooring was replaced with Brazilian granite. All the seats have been replaced, with space for 148 in total. All the commercial stores have been relocated to the sides of the departure hall, creating a more spacious environment for guests.
Greenery has been incorporated into the public arrivals hall, including shrubbery and various plants use for hanging gardens.
One of the key aspects of the project was creating a sculpture in the centre of the public departures hall. It comprises wooden pieces that begin in the centre and open in various directions. The airport believes this provides a feeling of warmth and versatility.
The design of the piece, known as ‘The Origin’, is meant to represent connectivity, as the airport connects the city to international destinations and allows people to travel to their desired locations.
“I want to congratulate the Quito International Airport for all the works implemented and thank all the companies involved that allow the correct operation of our airport. This is yet another example of how public-private alliances are very important for the productive development of the city. We will continue working in favour of Ecuador’s aviation,” said Sandro Ruiz, manager of the Metropolitan Public Airport Services Company (EPMSA).
